Product Overview
Cordyline Fruticosa Hilo is a colourful tropical foliage plant valued for its broad, glossy leaves and upright growth habit. Its lush appearance makes it an excellent choice for bright indoor spaces, patios, sheltered courtyards and tropical-style plant displays.
Growth:
Cordyline Fruticosa Hilo develops as an upright, clumping plant with broad leaves held along slender stems. Indoors, it generally remains compact and manageable, while mature plants grown in ideal conditions can become considerably taller over time.
Light Requirements:
Position in bright, indirect light for the best foliage colour and healthy growth. It will tolerate lower light levels, but colour may become less intense. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Soil Requirements:
Grow in a high-quality, free-draining indoor potting mix enriched with organic matter. Good drainage is essential, as Cordylines can develop root problems if kept constantly wet.
Water Requirements:
Water when the top few centimetres of potting mix begin to dry. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth slows.
Humidity and Temperature:
Cordyline Fruticosa Hilo prefers warm conditions and moderate to high humidity. Keep away from cold draughts, heaters and air-conditioning vents. As a tropical Cordyline, it should be protected from cold temperatures and frost.
Foliage and Flowering:
The main feature of Hilo is its broad tropical foliage, which provides strong colour and texture throughout the year. Mature plants may occasionally produce sprays of small pale flowers, although flowering is uncommon indoors and the plant is primarily grown for its foliage.
Pot Size and Spacing:
Hilo performs well in moderately sized containers with good drainage. Repot into the next pot size once the roots begin filling the existing container. Allow enough surrounding space for the broad leaves to develop without becoming crowded.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced liquid or controlled-release indoor plant fertiliser during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing. Reduce feeding during the cooler months.
Care and Maintenance:
Remove old or damaged lower leaves as required to maintain a tidy appearance. Wipe the foliage occasionally to remove dust and maintain its glossy appearance. Avoid overwatering and rotate the pot occasionally to encourage balanced growth.
