Product Overview
Ajuga reptans Burgundy Glow is a striking ground cover perennial admired for its colourful, tricolour foliage. Leaves display an ever-changing mix of silvery-green, cream, and rosy burgundy tones that intensify in cooler weather. During spring, it sends up short spikes of deep blue flowers that contrast beautifully with the variegated leaves. Hardy and low-maintenance, this Ajuga is ideal for mass planting, underplanting, edging, or adding a splash of colour to shady areas.
Growth:
Burgundy Glow forms a dense, spreading mat that reaches approximately 10–15 cm high and 40–60 cm wide. It spreads via runners to create a lush ground-hugging carpet, making it ideal for filling in gaps and suppressing weeds.
Light Requirements:
Best grown in part shade to full shade, especially in hot climates. While it can tolerate some sun, protection from harsh afternoon rays helps maintain the vibrancy of its variegated foliage.
Soil Requirements:
Performs well in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It adapts to a range of soil types but thrives in humus-rich, slightly acidic to neutral soils. Avoid overly dry or compacted conditions.
Water Requirements:
Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells or when newly planted. Once established, it can tolerate short dry periods but benefits from regular watering in warmer months to stay lush.
Frost Tolerance:
Burgundy Glow is frost-hardy in most parts of Australia. While some foliage may burn in heavy frost, it generally bounces back well with new spring growth.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established, especially in shaded sites. However, extended dry periods may cause the foliage to fade or reduce spreading, so occasional watering is beneficial.
Flowering Information:
In spring and early summer, short upright spikes of deep blue-purple flowers rise above the foliage. These blooms are bee-friendly and provide seasonal contrast to the colourful leaves.
Spacing Requirements:
Space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart to allow room for spreading. For faster coverage, plant more densely or use as a living mulch beneath shrubs or trees.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote strong growth and vivid foliage colour. A light layer of compost or mulch can also improve soil health and retain moisture.
Care and Maintenance:
Minimal care is required. Trim back flower spikes after blooming to tidy the plant and encourage new foliage. If needed, prune or divide clumps in early spring or autumn to control spread and reinvigorate growth. Regular mulching helps suppress weeds and conserve moisture.
