Product Overview

Tulbaghia violacea Ashanti Pearl is a refined and resilient clump-forming perennial featuring soft lilac-pink flowers with pearly overtones. Blooming for much of the year, it adds colour and movement to borders, rockeries, and dry garden designs. Its narrow, strappy foliage has a light garlic scent when crushed, helping to deter pests. Hardy, low-maintenance, and drought-tolerant, it’s ideal for tough spots and coastal or waterwise landscapes.

Growth:

Forms a tidy clump of slender, grey-green foliage reaching 30-40 cm tall and wide. Flowering stems rise slightly above the foliage, giving a light and airy appearance.

Light Requirements:

Performs best in full sun but tolerates part shade. More sun encourages better flowering and stronger form.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers well-drained soil and is adaptable to sandy, loamy, or even poor soils. Avoid waterlogged conditions, especially in winter.

Water Requirements:

Low to moderate water needs. Water during establishment, then only during extended dry spells. Performs well with minimal irrigation once mature.

Frost Tolerance:

Tolerates light frost. In cooler areas, it may slow or die back slightly in winter but regrows strongly in spring.

Drought Tolerance:

Highly drought-tolerant once established. Excellent choice for dry gardens, exposed sites, or low-maintenance plantings.

Flowering Information:

Produces clusters of star-shaped, soft lilac-pink flowers with a pearly sheen from spring through to autumn. Blooms are lightly fragrant and attractive to pollinators.

Spacing Requirements:

Plant 30-40 cm apart for full coverage or edging. Ideal for mass planting, border accents, or as a functional pest-repelling companion near vegie gardens.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid overfeeding, which may lead to excessive foliage growth and reduced flowering.

Care and Maintenance:

Extremely low maintenance. Remove spent flower stems to encourage repeat blooming. Trim old or untidy foliage as needed. Divide clumps every few years in early spring to maintain vigour and spread.
