Product Overview

Tulbaghia cominsii x violacea Fairy Stars is a compact, clump-forming perennial known for its fine, grass-like foliage and masses of delicate star-shaped lilac-pink flowers. With a soft, graceful habit and extended flowering season, this variety is ideal for borders, edging, and rockeries. It’s tough, drought-tolerant, and lightly garlic-scented, making it both ornamental and useful as a pest-repelling companion plant.

Growth:

Forms a neat clump approximately 20-30 cm tall and wide, with narrow, upright leaves and flower stems that gently arch above the foliage.

Light Requirements:

Performs best in full sun but tolerates part shade. Full sun encourages stronger flowering and tighter growth.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers free-draining soil and adapts well to sandy, loamy, or rocky soils. Avoid heavy or waterlogged conditions, especially in cooler months.

Water Requirements:

Low to moderate water needs. Water during establishment, then only during extended dry spells. Overwatering may reduce flowering.

Frost Tolerance:

Tolerates light frosts. In cooler regions, foliage may die back slightly in winter and regrow in spring.

Drought Tolerance:

Highly drought-tolerant once established. Performs well in dry borders, exposed positions, and waterwise gardens.

Flowering Information:

Produces small, star-shaped lilac-pink flowers on slender stems from spring through to autumn. Blooms are lightly scented and held in clusters above the foliage.

Spacing Requirements:

Plant 20-30 cm apart for edging or mass planting. Suitable for borders, containers, and around vegetable patches as a natural pest deterrent.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support flowering. Avoid overfeeding, which can result in excess foliage and fewer blooms.

Care and Maintenance:

Very low maintenance. Remove spent flower stems and trim back untidy foliage as needed. Divide clumps every few years in early spring to maintain vigour and spread the plant.
