Product Overview

Sedum spathulifolium Cape Blanco is a low-growing evergreen succulent with small rosettes of spoon-shaped leaves covered in a silvery-white, powdery coating. It forms a spreading carpet that suits rockeries, gravel gardens, shallow containers and the edges of raised beds, where its foliage can gently trail over the sides.

Growth:

Forms a compact mat approximately 5–10 cm high and 30–45 cm wide, gradually spreading through creeping stems and new rosettes. Flower stems rise above the foliage in the warmer months.

Light Requirements:

Grows best in full sun to part shade. In hot inland gardens, provide morning sun with protection from intense afternoon heat. Good light helps maintain compact growth and silvery foliage.

Soil Requirements:

Requires sharply drained, sandy or gravelly soil. Use a cactus and succulent potting mix for containers, adding pumice or perlite if needed. Avoid heavy soils and positions that remain wet during winter.

Water Requirements:

Water during establishment, allowing the soil to dry between applications. Once established, water occasionally during extended dry periods. Container plants may require more frequent watering in hot weather. Avoid keeping the root zone constantly moist.

Frost Tolerance:

Tolerates frost and cold conditions well when grown in freely draining soil. Good winter drainage is particularly important to prevent damage from prolonged wet conditions.

Drought Tolerance:

Good drought tolerance once established. Its fleshy leaves store moisture, although occasional watering helps maintain its appearance during prolonged heat and dry weather.

Flowering Information:

Produces clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers above the silvery foliage from late spring into summer. The flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects.

Spacing Requirements:

Space approximately 25–30 cm apart for a gradually joining ground cover. Allow around 40 cm between plants when maintaining separate clumps in mixed succulent displays.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Has low fertiliser requirements. If needed, apply a light feed of fertiliser suitable for succulents in spring, following the label directions. Avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage loose growth.

Care and Maintenance:

Remove spent flower stems and any dead or damaged foliage. Trim spreading stems as needed and replant healthy pieces to fill gaps. Avoid rubbing the leaves, as handling can remove their powdery coating. Keep fallen leaves and debris from collecting over the rosettes.
