Product Overview
Salvia Mystic Spires Blue is a compact, long-flowering perennial valued for its rich violet-blue flower spikes and dense, bushy growth. It provides strong colour through the warmer months and is well suited to garden borders, cottage gardens, mass planting, pollinator-friendly gardens and large containers.
Growth:
Salvia Mystic Spires Blue forms a compact, upright clump typically growing around 60 to 90cm high and approximately 60 to 80cm wide. It develops multiple flowering stems and maintains a neat, bushy habit with regular trimming.
Light Requirements:
Plant in full sun for the strongest growth and flowering. It can tolerate some light shade, although flowering may be reduced.
Soil Requirements:
Mystic Spires Blue prefers well-drained soil and adapts to a range of garden soil types. Improving the soil with organic matter before planting can help support strong growth and flowering.
Water Requirements:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, the plant has moderate water requirements and will tolerate short dry periods, although consistent moisture during hot weather will help maintain flowering.
Frost Tolerance:
Mystic Spires Blue has moderate frost tolerance. In colder areas, flowering and foliage may be reduced during winter, but established plants can recover strongly when warmer conditions return.
Drought Tolerance:
Once established, Mystic Spires Blue has good tolerance of dry conditions. Occasional deep watering during prolonged heat or drought will help maintain plant quality and flowering.
Flowering Information:
Tall spikes of rich violet-blue flowers are produced from spring through summer and into autumn, often continuing for an extended period in warm conditions. The flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.
Spacing Requirements:
Allow approximately 50 to 60cm between plants to provide room for mature growth and good airflow.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser during spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Additional feeding during the warmer months can be beneficial where plants are grown in containers or poorer soils.
Care and Maintenance:
Remove spent flower spikes regularly to encourage repeat flowering and maintain a tidy appearance. Light pruning can be used to keep plants compact and bushy. Cut back more firmly after the main flowering period if required to encourage fresh new growth.
