Product Overview

Pistachio Sirora is a high-yielding female variety specifically developed to thrive in Australian conditions. Released in 1982, Sirora has become a cornerstone of Australia's pistachio industry, renowned for its adaptability and exceptional nut quality.

Growth:

Sirora pistachio trees exhibit a spreading habit, often growing wider than they are tall, and typically reach heights between 2 to 5 metres. This manageable size makes them suitable for both commercial orchards and spacious home gardens.

Light Requirements:

Thriving in full sun, Sirora requires abundant sunlight to support vigorous growth and maximise nut production.

Soil Requirements:

This variety prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soils with a neutral to moderately alkaline pH. Incorporating organic matter can enhance soil fertility and structure, promoting optimal tree health.

Water Requirements:

While Sirora is drought-hardy once established, regular watering during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry periods will support healthy growth and nut development.

Frost Tolerance:

Sirora can tolerate mild frosts, making it suitable for regions with cold winters. However, young trees may benefit from protection during severe frost events.

Drought Tolerance:

Once established, Sirora exhibits significant drought tolerance, an advantageous trait for cultivation in arid and semi-arid regions.

Flowering and Fruiting Information:

Sirora produces elongated, medium-sized nuts with a good level of dehiscence, meaning the shells naturally split open upon maturity. The kernels are greenish-yellow with excellent taste quality, making them highly desirable for snacking and culinary uses. The nuts typically mature and are ready for harvest in late summer to early autumn, around February to March in Australia.

Pollinators:

As a dioecious species, pistachio trees require both male and female trees for pollination. It is recommended to plant one male tree for every 8 to 10 female trees to ensure effective pollination and nut set.

Spacing Requirements:

When planting Sirora pistachio trees, allow sufficient space for their spreading habit by spacing trees approximately 5 to 7 metres apart. This ensures adequate air circulation and access to sunlight, promoting healthy growth.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth and nut production. Soil testing can help determine specific nutrient needs, and incorporating organic matter can improve soil fertility.

Care and Maintenance:

Prune to maintain structure and remove any dead or diseased branches. Regular maintenance, including mulching and weed control, will promote healthy growth.
