Product Overview

Pistachio Blue Pollinator is a deciduous male pistachio tree grown to provide pollen for compatible female varieties such as Sirora. It does not produce nuts itself. Suited to regions with hot, dry summers and cold winters, it plays an essential role in nut production where its flowering overlaps with nearby female trees.

Growth:

Develops an upright to spreading canopy, eventually reaching approximately 5–8 m high and 4–6 m wide, depending on rootstock, conditions and pruning. Loses its leaves during winter.

Light Requirements:

Requires full sun in an open position. Allow good airflow around the canopy so wind can carry pollen to nearby female trees.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers deep, freely draining sandy or loamy soil. Tolerates neutral to moderately alkaline conditions. Avoid waterlogged sites and heavy soils with poor drainage.

Water Requirements:

Water deeply and regularly during establishment. Established trees benefit from supplementary watering during prolonged dry weather, particularly through spring and summer. Allow excess water to drain freely.

Frost Tolerance:

Established trees tolerate winter frost while dormant and require winter chilling for reliable flowering. Emerging growth and flowers can be damaged by late spring frosts.

Drought Tolerance:

Highly drought tolerant once established and well suited to dry inland conditions. Occasional deep watering supports healthy growth during extended drought.

Flowering Information:

Produces small, inconspicuous male flower clusters in spring that release windborne pollen. Blue is generally a mid-season flowering selection, flowering earlier than Red Pollinator. Flowering overlap with female trees varies with local conditions and winter chilling. No nuts are produced.

Pollinators:

Provides pollen for female pistachio trees such as Sirora when flowering coincides. Pistachios are wind pollinated and do not depend on bees for nut set. For small plantings, one established male can service approximately eight female trees with suitable placement and flowering overlap. Including another male selection with a different flowering time can broaden pollen availability.

Spacing Requirements:

Allow approximately 5–6 m between trees, with additional room for larger, unpruned canopies. Position the male near female trees and, where practical, on the side from which prevailing spring winds blow.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a balanced fertiliser suitable for nut trees in spring, following the label directions. Adjust feeding to tree growth and soil conditions, avoiding excessive nitrogen.

Care and Maintenance:

Train young trees to develop a strong framework and prune during dormancy to remove dead, damaged or crossing branches. Avoid excessive pruning of flowering wood. Remove shoots below the graft, maintain mulch clear of the trunk and keep irrigation away from the trunk base.
