Product Overview
Photinia × glabra Wonder Hedge PBR is an evergreen, compact hedge cultivar prized for its glossy foliage and frequent flushes of coppery-red new growth. Its self-branching habit and dense form make it ideal for formal hedges, screening, or as a striking garden backdrop.
Growth:
Typically grows to about 1.5-2 m high and 1.5-2 m wide in many conditions. It maintains a tidy, upright bushy habit, making it suitable for clipping and shaping.
Light Requirements:
Best performance and foliage colour in full sun to part shade. More sun enhances the red tones in new growth.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers well-drained soils. sandy, loamy or improved soils work well. Avoid sites that remain wet for long periods, as waterlogging can stress the plant.
Water Requirements:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it tolerates moderate dry periods but will benefit from supplemental watering during heatwaves.
Frost Tolerance:
Reasonably frost tolerant when mature. Young plants or extreme frost may cause damage to tender new growth, but the plant recovers.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. It can handle dry spells, especially with mulch and deep watering practices, though consistent moisture will help maintain lush foliage.
Flowering Information:
Small white clustered flowers appear in spring, often in terminal clusters. They are modest in show compared to the striking foliage.
Spacing Requirements:
Allow about 1.2-1.8 m between plants if planting as a hedge or screen. If you prune aggressively, plants can be placed closer.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Low feeding needs. A light application of balanced slow-release or native-friendly fertiliser in spring is sufficient. Avoid excessive nitrogen which may reduce foliage colour contrast.
Care and Maintenance:
Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new flushes of attractive growth. Remove dead, weak or crossing stems. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch slightly away from the stem.
