Product Overview
Peach Pullar Cling is a highly regarded clingstone variety, originating from the Pullar family’s orchard in Cobram, Victoria. Known for its large, juicy yellow flesh with a hint of red near the stone, this late-ripening peach is perfect for fresh eating and bottling.
Growth:
Pullar Cling peach trees grow to a mature height and spread of approximately 4 metres, forming a rounded and well-structured canopy. Their substantial size makes them ideal for larger gardens, offering a combination of beauty and productivity.
Light Requirements:
This peach thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day to produce sweet, well-developed fruit. Sufficient sunlight also helps prevent fungal issues by promoting dry foliage.
Soil Requirements:
Pullar Cling performs best in fertile, well-drained soils enriched with organic matter. Amending the soil with compost or aged manure improves its structure and nutrient availability. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0) is recommended for optimal growth.
Water Requirements:
Consistent watering is essential, particularly during the tree’s establishment phase and throughout the growing season. Deep watering encourages healthy root development, but avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root issues. Mulching around the base helps conserve moisture and keeps the soil temperature stable.
Frost Tolerance:
Once mature, Pullar Cling displays good tolerance to frost. However, younger trees and spring blossoms may require protection from late frosts in cooler climates to ensure a successful harvest.
Drought Tolerance:
While established trees can endure short dry periods, consistent watering during droughts is essential for maintaining fruit quality and yield. Mulching is effective in retaining soil moisture and reducing water stress.
Flowering and Fruiting Information:
In early spring, Pullar Cling produces a profusion of pink blossoms, which give way to large, golden-yellow peaches with red-stained flesh near the stone. The firm, juicy fruit is ideal for bottling, preserving, or enjoying fresh. The fruit ripens from late February to March, providing a reliable late-season harvest.
Pollinators:
This self-fertile variety does not require a pollination partner, making it a convenient choice for home gardens. Planting additional peach trees nearby can still enhance overall fruit production through cross-pollination.
Spacing Requirements:
Plant trees approximately 4 metres apart to allow for ample air circulation and sunlight penetration. Proper spacing ensures easier maintenance and efficient harvesting.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Feed Pullar Cling in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support vigorous growth and again after the fruiting period to replenish nutrients. Avoid excessive fertilisation, as too much nitrogen can lead to leafy growth at the expense of fruit.
Care and Maintenance:
Prune annually in late winter to maintain the tree’s structure and improve light and airflow through the canopy. Remove any damaged, diseased, or overcrowded branches. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature, ensuring the mulch is kept clear of the trunk to prevent rot. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases, addressing issues promptly to ensure healthy growth and a bountiful harvest.
