Product Overview
Peach O’Henry is a large, yellow-fleshed freestone peach variety known for its sweet, rich flavour and attractive bright red skin over a golden background. It performs well fresh, in baking, preserving or freezing, making it a versatile choice for home orchards and garden fruit trees.
Growth:
The O’Henry peach tree is vigorous and productive. Mature trees reach about 4 to 6 metres in height and spread, forming a broadly rounded canopy. Suitable for full garden planting; with careful pruning it can be maintained smaller for easier harvest and management.
Light Requirements:
Requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day) to develop optimal colour, flavour and fruit size. Good sun exposure also helps reduce disease pressure by keeping foliage dry.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Neutral to slightly acidic pH is ideal. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils; improve drainage with compost, well-rotted manure or coarse soil amendments where needed.
Water Requirements:
Requires regular, deep watering especially during establishment and in dry spells. Keep soil consistently moist through flowering, fruit set, and growth; reduce only slightly after harvest and as growth slows in cooler seasons.
Frost Tolerance:
Young trees and blossoms are vulnerable to late frosts. Once established, the tree has moderate frost tolerance. Protecting blossoms from spring frosts can improve fruit set.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate drought tolerance once established, but fruit quality and yield suffer if trees face prolonged dry periods. Mulching helps preserve soil moisture and stave off water stress.
Flowering and Fruiting Information:
Blooms in spring with showy pink blossoms. Fruit is large, yellow-fleshed, freestone type - easy to separate from the pit. Ripens in mid to late season (often later than many yellow peaches), making it one of the later-harvest peaches in home orchards. Attractive strong flavour with good texture; also good for freezing and preserving thanks to firm flesh.
Pollinators:
Self-fertile, so doesn’t require another peach tree to set fruit, though yields and fruit quality may improve with cross-pollination.
Spacing Requirements:
Plant trees about 4-5 metres apart to allow adequate canopy growth and airflow. For container or smaller space plantings, restrict size via pruning and dwarf or semi-dwarf rootstocks where available.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to stimulate flowering and new growth. After fruit set, a second feed with a formulation higher in potassium helps improve fruit quality. Mulch with organic matter yearly to maintain soil fertility.
Care and Maintenance:
Prune annually when dormant (late winter or early spring) to remove dead or diseased wood, open up the canopy for light penetration, and maintain manageable size. Thin excess fruit early in the season so remaining fruit grows larger and colours more evenly. Monitor for common peach pests and diseases (such as peach leaf curl, brown rot, and pests like aphids), and take action early. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch a few centimetres from trunk to prevent collar rot.
