Product Overview

Libertia ixiodes Taupo Blaze is a striking perennial plant known for its vibrant foliage that transitions through a range of colours, providing year-round interest in the garden. The sword-like leaves change from green to yellow, orange, and finally to deep burnt orange with red highlights in autumn. This compact plant is an excellent choice for adding a splash of colour to garden borders, containers, and patio settings.

Growth:

Grows to a height and width of approximately 60 cm, forming a compact, clumping habit. It is ideal for use as a perennial border, mass planting, or as a feature plant in containers and patio displays.

Light Requirements:

Prefers full sun to part shade. It performs best in a sunny position but can tolerate partial shade, which helps maintain its vibrant foliage colour.

Soil Requirements:

Thrives in well-drained, rich, composted soils but is also adaptable to sandy soils. It is not fussy about soil pH and can tolerate a range of soil types, as long as drainage is adequate.

Water Requirements:

Has a low water requirement once established, making it suitable for low-maintenance gardens. Water regularly during the establishment period, and then reduce watering frequency. It can tolerate dry conditions but performs best with occasional watering during extended dry spells.

Frost Tolerance:

Hardy to -18°C, making it suitable for a wide range of climates, including areas with harsh winters.

Drought Tolerance:

Moderately drought-tolerant once established. It thrives with minimal watering, making it an ideal choice for water-wise gardens.

Flowering Information:

Produces clusters of small, white, star-shaped flowers in spring that rise just above the foliage. The flowers are followed by attractive orange-red berries in autumn, adding additional seasonal interest.

Spacing Requirements:

Plant 30-40 cm apart for mass planting or as a border to ensure adequate air circulation and to allow the plant to achieve its full size and form.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a slow-release fertiliser annually in spring to support growth and maintain vibrant foliage. Avoid over-fertilising, as it can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of colour.

Care and Maintenance:

A low-maintenance plant that requires minimal attention once established. Remove spent flower and berry stems as needed to keep the plant tidy. No significant pests or diseases are associated with this plant, making it a reliable choice for low-maintenance gardens.
