Product Overview

Grevillea Bed Spread is a vigorous Australian native groundcover valued for its dense spreading habit, attractive foliage and colourful pink-red flowers. Its fast growth makes it an excellent choice for covering large garden areas, slopes and embankments, while its cascading habit also works beautifully over retaining walls and garden edges.

Growth:

Grevillea Bed Spread is a low, spreading shrub typically growing approximately 30 to 60cm high and 2 to 4 metres wide. It forms a dense mat of toothed green foliage, with new growth often showing attractive reddish tones. Its spreading growth can help suppress weeds and provide living groundcover over difficult areas.

Light Requirements:

Plant in full sun for the strongest growth and flowering. It will also tolerate some partial shade, although flowering may be more prolific in a sunny position.

Soil Requirements:

Grevillea Bed Spread is adaptable to sandy, loamy and clay soils provided drainage is good. Avoid locations that remain waterlogged for extended periods. Improving heavy soils and planting slightly raised can help provide suitable drainage.

Water Requirements:

Water regularly during establishment to encourage a strong root system. Once established, watering requirements are relatively low, although occasional deep watering during extended hot and dry periods will help maintain healthy growth.

Frost Tolerance:

Grevillea Bed Spread has good frost tolerance once established, making it suitable for gardens that experience cold winter conditions.

Drought Tolerance:

Once established, Grevillea Bed Spread has good drought tolerance. Its hardy nature makes it particularly useful for larger landscapes, embankments and other areas where a resilient, low-maintenance groundcover is required.

Flowering Information:

Pink to deep red toothbrush-style flowers are produced prominently during spring and autumn, with flowering capable of extending through other parts of the warmer growing season depending on conditions. The flowers contrast beautifully against the dense green foliage.

Spacing Requirements:

Allow approximately 2 to 3 metres between plants when allowing them to develop into broad individual groundcovers. Closer planting can be used where faster coverage of banks, slopes or larger garden areas is desired.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a fertiliser formulated for Australian native plants during spring to support healthy new growth and flowering. Avoid fertilisers containing high levels of phosphorus, as Grevilleas can be sensitive to excessive phosphorus. Gardening With Angus specifically recommends feeding Bed Spread with a native fertiliser in spring.

Care and Maintenance:

Grevillea Bed Spread is relatively low maintenance once established. Light pruning can be used to control its spread, maintain dense growth and encourage fresh foliage. Pruning after a major flowering period or in late spring will help maintain a neat, compact groundcover.
