Gardenia augusta Florida is a compact evergreen shrub cherished for its glossy, dark green foliage and intensely fragrant white flowers. Its elegant blooms and manageable size make it ideal for hedges, feature planting, or container gardens.
Growth:
This shrub typically grows to a height and width of 1 metre, forming a dense, rounded habit. Its lush foliage and neat form suit a variety of landscaping applications.
Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to part shade. In warmer climates, part shade during the hottest part of the day helps maintain healthy foliage and abundant blooms.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soils enriched with organic matter. Consistent soil moisture supports its health and flowering, but avoid waterlogging.
Water Requirements:
Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and keep roots cool.
Frost Tolerance:
Frost-sensitive, this variety benefits from protection in colder regions. In frost-prone areas, consider growing in pots for easy relocation during winter.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established, though consistent watering ensures the best flowering and overall health.
Flowering Information:
Blooms from late spring through summer with brilliant white flowers that exude a rich, sweet fragrance. Its continuous flowering adds charm and elegance to any garden.
Spacing Requirements:
Space plants 1 metre apart to allow for natural growth and proper airflow, supporting healthy development.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Feed with a fertiliser designed for acid-loving plants every 6–8 weeks during the growing season to encourage lush growth and extended flowering.
Care and Maintenance:
This low-maintenance plant thrives with occasional deadheading to encourage blooming. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain its compact shape. Regular mulching improves soil health and moisture retention.
