Product Overview
Chamelaucium uncinatum Geraldton Wax is a hardy Australian native shrub prized for its delicate waxy flowers and aromatic needle-like foliage. It’s an ideal plant for low-maintenance and drought-tolerant gardens, as well as a popular choice for cut flower arrangements due to the long-lasting nature of its blooms.
Growth:
Geraldton Wax typically grows between 1.5 to 4 metres tall, depending on the variety, and can spread up to 3 to 5 metres wide, forming a dense, bushy shrub.
Light Requirements:
This plant thrives in full sun but can also tolerate light shade. For the best flowering results, it should be placed in a sunny location with at least six hours of direct sunlight.
Soil Requirements:
Geraldton Wax prefers well-drained soils, such as sandy or loamy soil types. It is well-adapted to coastal areas and tolerates poor soil as long as it drains well, but it does not perform well in waterlogged conditions.
Water Requirements:
Once established, this plant is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. During the establishment phase, it benefits from regular watering, but afterward, it thrives on neglect and requires little to no water, except during extended dry periods.
Frost Tolerance:
Geraldton Wax can handle mild frosts, making it suitable for temperate climates.
Drought Tolerance:
Highly drought-tolerant, this plant is ideal for dry, low-water gardens.
Flowering Information:
This plant produces masses of small waxy flowers in white, pink, or purple, blooming from late winter through spring. These long-lasting blooms make it a favourite for cut flower arrangements.
Spacing Requirements:
For hedging or group planting, space plants about 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for proper growth and airflow.
Fertiliser Requirements:
A low-phosphorus, slow-release native fertiliser in spring will promote healthy growth and more abundant flowering. Over-fertilising is not necessary.
Care and Maintenance:
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the plant’s shape and encourage dense growth. This shrub responds well to pruning and can be shaped for hedging or screening purposes.
