Product Overview

Vitis vinifera Ornamental Grape is a fast-growing, deciduous climber known for its lush green foliage that transforms into brilliant hues of orange, red, and burgundy during autumn. This non-fruiting variety is ideal for covering pergolas, trellises, or fences, creating a vibrant display of seasonal colour while providing natural shade. Its vigorous growth and beautiful autumn tones make it a popular choice for Australian gardens.

Growth:

This vine can reach a height of 4 to 8 metres with a spread of up to 2.5 metres. When grown along a fence or trellis, it can spread up to 6 to 8 metres, providing excellent coverage and a natural canopy effect.

Light Requirements:

Thrives in full sun to part shade. For the most vibrant autumn colours, plant it in a sunny position. It can tolerate some shade but may not develop the same intensity of colour.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil. It adapts well to a variety of soil types and benefits from added organic matter to improve soil quality and moisture retention.

Water Requirements:

Requires regular watering during the establishment phase. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering, especially during prolonged dry periods.

Frost Tolerance:

Highly frost-tolerant and can withstand colder climates. It loses its leaves in winter and resprouts in spring, making it a suitable choice for areas with cold winters.

Drought Tolerance:

Moderately drought-tolerant once established. While it can survive dry conditions, consistent moisture will support healthier growth and more vibrant autumn foliage.

Flowering Information:

Produces small, insignificant flowers that are primarily grown for their foliage rather than blooms. This variety does not produce significant fruit, making it low-maintenance and less attractive to birds.

Spacing Requirements:

Space plants approximately 2 to 3 metres apart to ensure adequate air circulation and healthy growth.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth. Additional feeding during the growing season will promote lush foliage.

Care and Maintenance:

Prune in late winter to maintain the desired size and shape. Regular pruning will prevent the vine from becoming too aggressive and ensure it does not overtake nearby plants. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
