Product Overview
Peacherine is a unique fruit that combines the best characteristics of peaches and nectarines. It produces large, sweet, and juicy fruit with smooth skin, lacking the fuzz typical of peaches, and vibrant colouring with a red blush over a green-yellow background.
Growth:
Peacherine trees are deciduous and typically grow to a height and spread of approximately 3 metres, making them ideal for home gardens. These self-fertile trees do not require a pollination partner to produce fruit, ensuring reliable yields even in smaller orchards.
Light Requirements:
This variety thrives in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and fruit production.
Soil Requirements:
Peacherine prefers well-drained, fertile soils enriched with organic matter. Adding compost or aged manure improves soil structure and fertility. Good drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging and root-related issues.
Water Requirements:
Regular watering is crucial, especially during the tree's establishment phase and throughout the growing season. Deep watering once a week is generally sufficient, though adjustments may be needed based on rainfall and soil conditions. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Frost Tolerance:
Peacherine trees are moderately frost-tolerant and suitable for temperate and subtropical climates. Young trees may need protection from severe frosts during their early establishment phase.
Drought Tolerance:
Once established, Peacherine trees can handle short periods of drought. However, consistent watering during extended dry spells ensures fruit quality and overall tree health.
Flowering and Fruiting Information:
Peacherine trees bloom in early to mid-spring, producing a beautiful display of delicate pink blossoms that attract pollinators to the garden. The fruit develops through the warmer months and ripens in late January. Medium to large in size, the fruit features firm, sweet, and juicy yellow flesh, making it ideal for fresh eating, stewing, jams, cooking, and preserving.
Pollinators:
As a self-fertile variety, Peacherine does not require a pollination partner to bear fruit.
Spacing Requirements:
For optimal growth and air circulation, space Peacherine trees approximately 3 to 4 metres apart. This spacing accommodates their mature size and facilitates maintenance activities like pruning and harvesting.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Fertilise Peacherine trees in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and fruit production. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it can promote vegetative growth at the expense of fruiting. Mulching helps retain moisture and improve soil health.
Care and Maintenance:
Prune during the dormant season to remove dead or overcrowded branches and shape the tree. Thin developing fruit to enhance size and quality while reducing strain on branches. Monitor for pests and diseases common to stone fruits, such as aphids or fungal infections, and treat promptly. Mulching conserves moisture, regulates soil temperature, and suppresses weeds.
