Product Overview

Jasminum polyanthum Jasmine is a fast-growing evergreen climber renowned for its abundant, sweetly scented white flowers, which emerge from pink buds during the spring and summer months. This vigorous plant is well-suited to Australian gardens, where it can be used to cover fences, archways, and trellises or grown in large containers on patios to fully enjoy its fragrance.

Growth:

This jasmine can reach up to 6 metres in height and 4 metres in width if left unchecked. It thrives in a full sun to partly shaded position and benefits from regular pruning to maintain its shape and control its growth, making it a perfect choice for trellises or over archways.

Light Requirements:

It prefers a position in full sun to part shade. While it can tolerate some shade, it will flower more profusely with plenty of sunlight.

Soil Requirements:

Jasminum polyanthum thrives in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Before planting, mix in compost or a premium soil improver. When grown in pots, use a high-quality potting mix and ensure proper drainage.

Water Requirements:

Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but will need additional watering during prolonged dry periods, especially in hotter climates.

Frost Tolerance:

This plant can tolerate light frost but should be protected in areas prone to severe frost. Mulching around the base can help protect the roots during colder months.

Drought Tolerance:

Moderately drought-tolerant once established, but it’s best to water it consistently during dry spells to prevent stress on the plant.

Flowering Information:

The plant produces fragrant white star-shaped flowers from pink buds, typically in spring and summer, adding both beauty and a delightful scent to the garden.

Spacing Requirements:

Space plants about 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth. This will also help manage its vigorous spreading habit.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Feed in early spring and after flowering with a controlled-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering. Organic mulch and compost will also benefit the plant by improving soil fertility.

Care and Maintenance:

Prune after flowering to control its shape and size, especially in more confined spaces. Regular trimming will encourage a bushier growth and more blooms in the following season. Keep an eye out for common pests like aphids and scale, and treat them as needed.
