Product Overview

Jacaranda mimosifolia is a deciduous tree renowned for its vibrant, lavender-blue, bell-shaped flowers that adorn the canopy in spring and early summer, often blooming on bare branches. Its delicate, fern-like foliage emerges bright green, providing dappled shade, and transitions to yellow in autumn before shedding. This elegant tree is a popular choice for adding a splash of colour to gardens and streetscapes.

Growth:

Jacaranda mimosifolia typically reaches a height of 10 to 15 metres, with a broad, spreading canopy up to 10 metres wide. It exhibits a moderate to fast growth rate, developing an open, vase-shaped form that provides light, filtered shade.

Light Requirements:

Thrives in full sun, which promotes optimal flowering and growth. While it can tolerate partial shade, reduced sunlight may lead to diminished flowering.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers well-drained, fertile soils but is adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. It tolerates a wide pH range, from acidic to slightly alkaline, making it versatile for various planting sites.

Water Requirements:

Regular watering is essential during the establishment phase. Once established, Jacaranda mimosifolia is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods to support flowering and overall health.

Frost Tolerance:

Young trees are susceptible to frost damage and should be protected in cooler climates. Mature trees can tolerate light frosts; however, severe frosts may damage branches and affect flowering.

Drought Tolerance:

Once established, this species exhibits moderate drought tolerance. However, prolonged dry conditions can reduce flowering and vigor, so supplemental watering during extended droughts is beneficial.

Flowering Information:

Blooms in mid to late spring, producing abundant clusters of lavender-blue, trumpet-shaped flowers that can last for several weeks. The flowering period often coincides with the shedding of old leaves, resulting in a striking display on near-bare branches.

Spacing Requirements:

For landscape planting, space trees approximately 10 metres apart to accommodate their mature canopy spread and ensure proper air circulation.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support new growth and flowering. Avoid excessive fertilisation, as this can lead to lush foliage at the expense of blooms.

Care and Maintenance:

Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crossing branches and to maintain a desirable shape. Minimal pruning is required, as excessive trimming can reduce flowering. Jacaranda mimosifolia is generally pest-resistant and low-maintenance, making it an excellent choice for urban and residential landscapes.
