Product Overview
Elaeagnus × ebbingei Ebbing's Silverberry is a versatile evergreen shrub celebrated for its dense, glossy foliage with silvery undersides. Its hardy nature and attractive appearance make it an excellent choice for hedging, screening, or adding structure to mixed plantings.
Growth:
Ebbing's Silverberry grows to a height and width of 2.5 to 4 metres. Its moderate to fast growth rate allows it to establish quickly, making it ideal for creating privacy or windbreaks.
Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it tolerates full shade, brighter conditions enhance its dense foliage and flowering potential.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers well-drained soils but is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It performs well in both acidic and alkaline conditions.
Water Requirements:
Requires regular watering during establishment. Once mature, it becomes moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry spells.
Frost Tolerance:
Hardy to frost and well-suited to Australian climates with cooler winters. Sheltered planting can protect younger plants in severe frost areas.
Drought Tolerance:
Exhibits good drought tolerance once established, though prolonged dry periods may affect foliage quality. Supplemental watering during these times is recommended.
Flowering Information:
Produces fragrant, creamy-white flowers in autumn, followed by small, red fruits in spring. These edible fruits are attractive to birds and other wildlife.
Spacing Requirements:
Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for a dense hedge. This allows for sufficient airflow and healthy growth while forming a continuous screen.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage new growth, particularly in nutrient-poor soils. Avoid over-fertilising, as it is naturally resilient and low-maintenance.
Care and Maintenance:
Prune in late spring or early summer to maintain shape and encourage a denser habit. Mulch lightly around the base to retain moisture and improve soil quality, keeping mulch away from the crown to prevent rot.
