Product Overview
Dichondra Repens is a hardy, low-growing groundcover with small, kidney-shaped leaves that create a dense, lush carpet. It is commonly used as a lawn alternative, in-between pavers, or as a low-maintenance groundcover. This Australian native is perfect for shady spots or areas where grass may struggle, and its spreading habit makes it excellent for covering large areas.
Growth:
Dichondra Repens typically grows to a height of 2-5 cm and spreads up to 1-2 metres, forming a dense, mat-like covering. Its creeping habit makes it ideal for filling in gaps between paving stones or as a soft, walkable groundcover.
Light Requirements:
It performs well in part shade to full shade but can also tolerate some sun. It is particularly useful for shaded garden areas where other plants may not thrive.
Soil Requirements:
Dichondra prefers well-drained soils and can adapt to sandy or loamy soils. It thrives in moist, fertile conditions but can handle a variety of soil types.
Water Requirements:
Once established, Dichondra Repens is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. It prefers regular watering during dry periods, but it can survive on natural rainfall in more humid environments.
Frost Tolerance:
This plant is frost-tolerant and can survive in cooler climates with light frost.
Drought Tolerance:
Dichondra is drought-tolerant, making it a good choice for low-water gardens, especially in shaded areas where water may be scarce.
Flowering Information:
Dichondra Repens produces small, inconspicuous white or greenish-yellow flowers, which bloom sporadically throughout the year, though it is primarily grown for its attractive foliage.
Spacing Requirements:
For mass planting or groundcover, space plants 30-50 cm apart for full coverage.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth. Mulching around the plants will help retain moisture and improve soil conditions.
Care and Maintenance:
Dichondra Repens is very low-maintenance. Occasional mowing or trimming will help maintain its dense, mat-like appearance, and regular watering during dry periods will support lush growth.
