Product Overview

Beetroot Detroit Red (Beta vulgaris) is a classic, heirloom-style beetroot celebrated for its deep crimson roots, smooth round shape and consistently tender texture. Fast growing and adaptable, it performs well in most home gardens, whether planted in beds, raised planters or large containers. Detroit Red develops best when harvested at a medium size, offering a rich, earthy flavour with a gentle sweetness. Unlike some varieties that become woody if left too long, this beetroot stays firm yet tender, making it a favourite for reliable, versatile harvests. Its leafy tops are also edible, providing nutritious greens with a mild, peppery taste.

How To Grow:

Plant in rich, well drained soil and keep evenly moist to encourage uniform root development. Thin seedlings early to allow roots to form properly. Mulch to retain moisture and reduce soil temperature in hot weather.

When To Plant:

Early spring through early autumn. In warm climates, plant most of the year.

Harvest:

Ready in 8-10 weeks. Harvest when roots are smooth, firm and around the size of a golf ball to ensure the best texture and flavour.

Position:

Full sun to light part shade. Ideal for vegetable beds, borders and containers.

Soil Type:

Free draining, fertile soil enriched with compost or well aged organic matter.

Growing Tips:

Avoid water stress as inconsistent moisture can cause woody roots. Pick a few outer leaves at a time to use as greens without slowing root growth. For a continuous supply, plant in small batches every few weeks.

Notes:

Excellent roasted, pickled, steamed or blended into soups. Roots offer bold colour and sweetness, while the greens can be sautéed or used fresh. Supplied as a punnet of seedlings from the Howlong Healthy Living Vegetable Collection.
